There are tens of thousands of people who ride their bikes daily in Calgary. That is a fantastic reality. I would guess that over 90% of the trips people take on their bike serve the purpose of moving one person (the rider) from one place to another. Many would have panniers or backpacks with clothes, books or a computer. Carrying those items is a byproduct of the main goal: moving a person. Transporting things by bike is not something we think about often, at least not here in Calgaryybe we should.

An image search of ‘cycling in China’ or ‘cycling in India’ will reveal some interesting if not innovative uses for a bike as a means to transport everything from live animals to building supplies.
We learned to ride bikes as children, and it gave us seemingly limitless freedom. I still feel that way when I hop on my bike. I feel like I can do anything and go anywhere.  With that feeling, why do we limit ourselves to carrying only the most minor of things?
When I have transported something out of the ordinary on my bike, I feel a sense of accomplishment.
Reminding myself that so much more is possible than what we typically settle for encourages me to push the limits further. Perhaps even more importantly using a bike to transport just myself seems easy after moving, say a propane tank.

What interesting stuff have you moved by bike?
